Why Maths Word Problems Are Harder Than They Look — and How to Teach Them

It's a familiar pattern: a student handles a bare equation confidently, but the same underlying problem, wrapped in a paragraph of text, causes them to freeze. The issue usually isn't maths ability — it's a missing "translation" step.

Word Problems Require Two Separate Skills, Not One

Solving a word problem means first translating language into a mathematical structure, then solving that structure. Students are often taught the second skill thoroughly and the first barely at all, which is exactly where the difficulty concentrates.

Teach Keyword Patterns, But Don't Stop There

Words like "total," "difference," "twice as many," or "per" do map to fairly consistent operations, and that's a useful starting scaffold. But over-relying on keyword-spotting breaks down on multi-step or unusually phrased problems — it needs to be a stepping stone, not the whole strategy.

Build the Habit of Defining Variables First

Before attempting to solve anything, students should practise writing "let x = ..." in plain language for what the unknown actually represents. This single habit prevents a large share of setup errors, especially in problems with two related unknowns.

Use Bar Models or Diagrams for Visual Learners

Sketching a simple bar model or diagram before writing an equation helps many students "see" the relationship between quantities, particularly for ratio and proportion problems where the relationships aren't immediately obvious from the text alone.

Practice With Problems That Don't Match a Template

If every practice problem follows the same pattern as the worked example, students learn to pattern-match rather than genuinely translate. Mixing in problems with slightly different structures forces the actual translation skill to develop, rather than memorised shortcuts.
