Online vs In-Person Tutoring for Maths: What Actually Makes a Difference
A common assumption among parents is that in-person tuition is inherently more effective than online classes. After years of running both, what we've found is that format matters far less than three other factors.
Factor 1: Whether Sessions Are Genuinely 1-on-1
A 1-on-1 online class with full attention on one student consistently outperforms an in-person group class of four or five, regardless of the physical setting. Group format, not location, is usually the bigger factor in how much individual attention a child actually receives.
Factor 2: Whether There's a Real Diagnostic Before Teaching Begins
Both online and offline tutors can either start with the current chapter or start by identifying actual gaps. This diagnostic step matters more to outcomes than whether the whiteboard is physical or digital.
Factor 3: Whether Progress Is Actually Tracked
In-person tuition has historically had an advantage here simply because parents could ask the tutor directly after each session. Online tuition closes this gap easily with written monthly reports and direct messaging access β arguably making tracking more consistent, not less.
Where Online Genuinely Has an Edge
Interactive digital whiteboards let students annotate and the tutor save session notes automatically β useful for revision later in a way handwritten notes from an in-person session rarely are. Scheduling flexibility and zero commute time are also real, practical advantages, especially for board-exam years with tight schedules.
Where In-Person Still Has a Case
Some younger students focus better with a physically present adult, and very hands-on subjects can benefit from physical materials. For Maths and Hindi specifically, though, the gap has narrowed significantly with good digital whiteboard tools and a genuinely 1-on-1, diagnostic-first approach.
